Overcoming My Fear of Heights
Share
There was a time when I didn’t think I belonged.
I came to the U.S. around 13 years old—barely able to read or speak English. Everything felt foreign. I sat quietly in classrooms, trying to understand words, faces, tones, and instructions that flew past me like wind. At times, I felt invisible. But deep inside, something burned brighter than the fear—a fire to become something greater.
That fire led me to the military. I thought, "If I can't be understood, I'll outwork them. I'll rise by effort."
And I did. Until I hit a wall.
🚫 I Said No to Airborne
When I was first asked to join Airborne School, my heart dropped. The thought of jumping out of a plane made my stomach twist. I was afraid of heights—deeply afraid. I said no.
But later, during training, I saw other soldiers prepping to go to Airborne School—and something shifted in me. I saw women among them. Warriors. Coaches. Fearless. And I thought to myself: “If they can do it, why not me?”
That whisper became louder. That fear became fuel.
And I said: Yes. Let’s go Airborne.
🪂 Five Jumps to Freedom
Airborne School was no joke. I showed up with a friend, and we were surrounded by 500 people. Only 30 of us were women. The drill sergeant said, “Half of you will be gone in a week.”
We had to complete five jumps to graduate. Every time I stepped onto that plane, fear tried to return. But something else was rising louder: faith, resilience, hope.
When I made that fifth jump and landed—I felt like the man in The Pursuit of Happyness. That silent, tearful moment when everything shifts. It was one of the defining moments of my life. That’s when I realized…
✨ I can do anything I put my mind to. ✨
🎓 From the Sky to a Degree
After that, I knew: if I could jump out of a plane, I could go to college—even though English wasn’t my first language. And I did.
I earned a degree in Supply Chain Management.
I worked for a corporation, learning structure, flow, and process.
But I always knew this wasn’t the final destination—just a stepping stone to something greater.
🌱 From Pain to Purpose
Looking back now, I believe God was preparing me. Because nothing could’ve trained me better to face the deep losses that followed:
My mother
My father
My sister
The grief was immense—but the strength I gained in Airborne and beyond gave me the courage to ask new questions:
How do I heal without numbing the pain?
How do I heal without toxins or pills?
What is my purpose in all this loss?
And in that search… Legends of Hope was born.
